Interesting Fact: The Cheerful Quokkas
Rottnest Island is famously home to the quokka, a small marsupial that’s often referred to as the “world’s happiest animal” due to its friendly demeanor and seemingly constant smile. Unique to Western Australia, quokkas are highly adaptive, able to survive the island’s scarce freshwater sources by eating succulent leaves that retain moisture. These charming creatures are not only a delight to encounter but also play a crucial role in the island’s ecosystem. Spotting a quokka is more than a photo opportunity, it’s a chance to connect with one of Australia’s most endearing and rare animals.
Encounters with Iconic Wildlife and Local Flavors
Keep your camera ready for those adorable quokka encounters as you pedal around the island. While they are found across the island, they are most commonly spotted in specific areas. The Main Settlement Area is the most frequent place to see them roaming near cafes and shops looking for shade. You can also spot them near the open spaces of the Rottnest Island Golf Course, or around the bushland of The Basin during the cooler early morning or late afternoon hours when they are most active.
After a day of exploration, treat yourself to a ‘Cray Dog’ at The Lane, a local culinary delight featuring the fresh Western Rock Lobster, or as the locals call it, ‘Cray’. It’s the perfect way to refuel and savor the local flavors after an active day.

VANZ EXPERT TIPS FOR THE PERFECT ROADTRIP DAY
- Beat the Wind: We generally recommend riding around the island clockwise to have the wind at your back on your way home. Expert Note: Right on the left side past the molo (jetty) is the local Visitor Information Centre. We highly recommend checking on the spot upon arrival whether a clockwise or counter-clockwise route will be better suited for the day’s specific wind conditions.
- Chasing the Best Snorkel Spots: For the best visibility and calm waters, plan to snorkel in the morning at Parker Point or Salmon Bay. In the afternoon, head over to the sheltered waters of Little Armstrong Bay, Parakeet Bay, or the natural swimming pool at The Basin.
- Water Logistics: There is limited drinking facilities outside the main settlement area. Be sure to take plenty of water with you before leaving the port.
- Quokka Etiquette: You will easily find quokkas hanging out next to the local bakery and settlement cafes, but these specific animals are often fed by tourists. For a more authentic experience, look for them along the quieter tracks. Always remember to respect their natural behaviour: observe them from a distance, do not touch them, and absolutely avoid feeding them to ensure their wellbeing.
